What a successful day for our girls! Playing Saturday with only six athletes meant there were no substitutions and no brakes, they battled through every point against outstanding competition. We opened by standing Toe-to-toe with division 1 Port Huron falling, 18-25 and 16-25. Against division 2 Corunna, we nearly pulled off the upset after building a 22-16 lead in the first set. Fatigue began to show against Novelle Catholic, but the girls responded with a strong second set. By our bracket match against Chesaning, they were running on fumes yet continued competing with tremendous effort and great attitude. The statistics reflect that determination: Kills: Haerin Whitehead 10, Iris Echlin 6, Makenna Zervan 4 Assist: Sierra Flannery 10, Haerin Whitehead 8 Digs: Delilah Mishler and Makenna 10 each Iris 8 Aces: Haerin 4 Blocks: Makenna 3, Sierra 2 Team totals 26 kills 23 assists 56 digs and 12 aces. The energy and effort were palpable, officials and parents from other teams approached us throughout the day to comment on how tough these girls were, and that says more than any final score. I couldn’t be prouder of how hard they played, how they supported one another, and the attitude they maintained throughout four demanding matches. They represented Byron exceptionally well and proved that this team can compete with anyone.
