The Byron Eagles put together one of their most complete performances of the season Thursday night, October 8, cruising to a 42-6 victory over New Haven Merritt Academy. Behind a powerful rushing attack and an outstanding defensive effort, the Eagles controlled the game from start to finish and walked away with another big win. Eagles Ground Game Leads the Way Byron's offense found its rhythm early and never looked back, relying on a strong rushing attack to move the ball down the field. Leading the charge was Sophomore #33 Forgie, who rushed for 167 yards on 21 carries and found the end zone four times. Averaging 8 yards per carry, he was a consistent threat every time he touched the football. Not far behind was Sophomore #12 Gatica, who added 102 rushing yards on 11 carries and two touchdowns of his own. His impressive 9.3 yards per carry helped keep the Eagles offense moving throughout the night. Together, the two combined for 269 rushing yards and all six of Byron's touchdowns. The Eagles finished with 273 rushing yards as a team. A huge amount of credit also goes to Byron's offensive line, which continued to create running lanes and give the Eagles backs opportunities to make plays. The physicality up front was a major factor in Byron's offensive success. Defense Shuts Down Merritt Academy While the offense put points on the board, Byron's defense delivered an equally impressive performance. The Eagles held Merritt Academy to just 13 total yards of offense in the entire first half, making it nearly impossible for the home team to establish any momentum. Merritt managed another 68 yards in the second half, but Byron's defense finished the night allowing just 81 total yards of offense. Several Eagles turned in strong defensive performances: Sophomore #10 Herbst and Sophomore #64 McCartney: Led the team with 6.5 tackles each. Junior #27 MacKay: Recorded 5.5 tackles. Senior #8 Ritter and Sophomore #14 Villani: Each recorded half a sack and a fumble recovery. Sophomore #25 Rohner: Added a sack and four tackles. Sophomore #64 McCartney: Was a force in the backfield, recording an impressive 5.5 tackles for loss. Junior #44 Adkins: Added a tackle for loss. The defensive front consistently disrupted Merritt's offense, while the rest of the unit did an excellent job limiting opportunities for big plays. The offense was physical and productive, the defense was aggressive and disciplined, and the team continued to show growth on both sides of the ball. The 42-6 victory gives the Eagles another reason to be excited about the direction of their season as they look to carry this momentum into their next matchup. Go Eagles!
